Dr. Jose Maria Balmaceda is a Professor at the Institute of Mathematics, University of the Philippines Diliman and current member of the Commission for Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union representing Asia. He was President of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society in 2018-2019.

Professor Balmaceda obtained his Ph.D. Mathematics degree in 1991 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and master’s and undergraduate degrees in mathematics from the University of the Philippines. His research and publications are in finite group theory and their representations, and algebraic combinatorics.

Since 2008, he has been an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines. A former President of the Mathematical Society of the Philippines, he is currently Chair of the Technical Panel for Mathematics of the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education.
